For two weeks, twenty- two elementary school Science and Mathematics teachers from Lamar County Elementary School spent the first part of their summer vacation studying content for a deeper understanding of science and mathematics. The teachers engaged in a learning opportunity sponsored by a grant from the Department of Education (DOE) of the State of Georgia in conjunction with the School of Education at Gordon State College. This program was created to improve the content knowledge of elementary science and mathematics teachers. The teachers attended sessions from 8 am until 3 pm daily where they received instruction from faculty from the science, mathematics and education departments at Gordon State College.

They had mathematics instruction in the morning and science instruction in the afternoon. The instruction was content based and aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS for science) and the Common Core State Standards (CCSS formathematics). The teachers actively engaged in Inquiry based learning and hands-on activities.
